US vetoes call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza

The US has drafted a UN Security Council resolution calling for a “temporary ceasefire” in Gaza, linked to the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Washington traditionally shields Israel from UN action, and it did so again today, angering many by vetoing an Algerian resolution demanding an “immediate ceasefire”.
