US government shutdown increasingly likely

In the United States, a government shutdown is looking increasingly likely unless agreement over spending levels can be reached between Republicans and Democrats in Congress within hours.

The budget logjam has to be unblocked by the deadline of midnight tomorrow or federal government employees, including the military, can no longer be paid.

A short-term funding bill that could have pushed back that deadline has just been blocked by hard-line Republicans.
