9/11: new photos released of White House response

New photos are released of then US President George W Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney co-ordinating the White House’s response to the 9/11 terror attacks.

Photos from the US National Archives

The photos show President Bush meeting with senior cabinet members at the White House’s emergency operations centre immediately after the terror attacks on 11 September 2001 that struck New York and the Pentagon.

The photos show then Vice President Dick Cheney onboard the Marine Two White House helicopter and consulting with Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.

George Bush’s wife Laura can also be seen in some of the photos.

‘War on terror’

The attacks that day killed nearly 3,000 people in New York City, Washington and Pennsylvania.

They led the US to attack Afghanistan to oust the ruling Taliban, which had harboured al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

The US later took its “war on terror” to Iraq, confronting the forces of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein over his alleged weapons of mass destruction.

The photos were released by the US National Archives on Flickr in response to a freedom of information request from a documentary group.
