UK heatwave: 40C expected as Met Office issues first ever red warning

The red heat warning is at the level of a “national emergency” and is similar to those issued for very strong winds and heavy snow.

What was an amber warning, has been upgraded to red for much of England – and the area affected on Monday and Tuesday next week, stretches out from the Midlands to York and Manchester and covers London.

The amber warning is in place in southern Scotland, Wales and the rest of England.
