UK government climbdown over Covid votes

The government has conceded that MPs should have a vote on any new laws that impose nationwide coronavirus restrictions across England.

Boris Johnson climbed down to avoid a large rebellion of backbenchers who accused him of governing by “decree”.

They were backed up by the Commons Speaker, who criticised the government for treating parliament with “contempt”.
