UK and other European countries recognise Guaidó as Venezuela’s leader

International Editor

‘The people will never surrender’, the embattled Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro has declared as he condemned what he called the ‘cowardly’ and ‘disastrous’ move by Britain and other European countries to recognise his opponent Juan Guaidó as interim president.

Britain said it was now considering imposing sanctions to help bring about change in Venezuela and has urged Guaidó to hold free and fair elections as soon as possible.

But President Maduro shows no sign of budging. Our international editor Lindsey Hilsum is in Caracas. Jon Snow is joined by the Labour MP Chris Williamson, who like Jeremy Corbyn, has supported the Chavez and Maduro governments in Venezuela.
