Now – it’s been the warmest day of the year so far and the combination of sunshine and easing of lockdown restrictions has drawn many people to the countryside – determined to take full advantage of the Bank holiday weekend. But there’s a downside: a tsunami of litter – as staycationing Brits treat their country’s beauty spots like giant skips. In the Lake District National Park – our chief correspondent Alex Thomson has been out with the UK’s most extreme litterpickers – lake deep, mountain high.
