Thousands take to the streets for rival refugee protests in Chemnitz

Our past history forces us to resolutely defend democracy, the German foreign minister declared, as anti-immigration protesters marched through the streets of Chemnitz following a week of violence.

Rival demonstrators took to the streets too, some trying to block the route of the far-right protest, shouting slogans like ‘heart not hate’.
