Surprise boost for UK economy after record tax payments in January

Official figures have shown a surprise surplus of £5 billion in the UK’s public finances last month – far better than the £8 billion deficit that had been expected.

The windfall has increased pressure on the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to allow improved pay offers for public sector workers, as he prepares for his budget next month.
