Sudan military coup overthrows president after 30 years in power, following mass protests

Sudan’s president Omar al-Bashir has been overthrown by a military coup and is now under arrest – after almost 30 years in power. Cheering crowds initially gathered in the capital, Khartoum – but as army leaders declared they were taking charge for the next two years – one of the main groups behind the anti-government protests vowed to stay on the streets until there were ‘free and fair elections’.
