Storm Éowyn: Record winds, schools closed and flights cancelled

The rare red weather warnings were correct.

First, Storm Éowyn brought record wind speeds to Ireland – the strongest gust officially measured at 114 miles per hour.

It left hundreds of thousands of homes without power there and a quarter of a million cut off in Northern Ireland.

Then it battered central Scotland with gusts hitting 100 miles an hour.

Hundreds of schools were closed, flights were cancelled and road, rail and sea transport remain severely disrupted.
