Protesters in Barcelona demand united Spain

There have been calls from around the world for Spain and Catalonia to step back from the brink – and start talking. But while there were words from the Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy, they appeared to up the ante. He vowed to do whatever it takes to prevent Catalonia breaking away – even suggesting he could suspend its regional government and take control of the region from Madrid. This as hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of the Catalan capital Barcelona to protest against independence.
