Prison staff protest over ‘unprecedented’ violence

Prison officers are back at work after protesting outside jails across England and Wales about what they call an “unprecedented” level of violence.

Many say they’ve been attacked, spat at or suffered post-traumatic stress and fear for their safety.

Today, they met the prisons minister and will hold further talks next week. But after months of riots by inmates, overcrowding, underfunding and ever more damning reports from inspectors, who is in control?
