President Trump rejects Puerto Rico hurricane death statistics

Social Affairs Editor and Presenter

President Trump has lashed out at an independent study that concluded an estimated 2,975 people died in Puerto Rico in the five months after Hurricane Maria struck there last year.

The president rejected the figure on Twitter. He’s provided no evidence to support his tweets, declaring the revised toll a democratic plot to make him look bad.

His comments have not been well received by many Puerto Ricans, like Federico de Jesús. He worked in the Obama administration, and last year travelled to the island to help in the aftermath of Maria.
