President Biden calls for unity as he says ‘democracy has prevailed’

A new day, a new era. President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris have been sworn into office, pledging to write a new chapter in America’s story and declaring “at this hour, democracy has prevailed”.

The theme of this day was all about unity, although the man who had done so much to shatter it was conspicuous by his absence.

Donald Trump shunning the ceremony, a sore loser to the end.

Millions of his supporters will be looking for a new political home. And America will now be run by one party –  in charge of Congress and the White House.
