Pigeons: the secret heroes of World War I honoured in art installation

It’s a work of art on an unprecedented scale, an airborne installation rising at dusk above the River Thames. Fifteen hundred LED-lit pigeons released into the skies over east London in homage to the crucial role the birds played during the First World War.

We went to an abandoned driving range on the banks of the Thames Estuary to meet the American artist Duke Riley and the pigeons.
