Paying homage to WW1’s Harlem Hellfighters

One group of soldiers fought for democracy on the battlefields of France at a time when they were battling prejudice and racial segregation back home. Lieutenant James Reese Europe and his military band were the first African-American infantry regiment to fight in the First World War, nicknamed the Harlem Hellfighters. Now American jazz pianist Jason Moran is paying homage to the war hero and composer who brought ragtime music to France in 1918.
