Ofcom to be given new powers over social media

The broadcasting watchdog Ofcom is to be put in charge of policing the internet too, with bosses from social media firms who fail to protect users possibly facing fines or even jail.

Under government plans, internet giants such as Youtube and Facebook will have to make clear what behaviour and content is allowed on their sites and the regulator will ensure they enforce those rules and remove illegal content promptly.
