Mikhail Gorbachev: Last leader of the Soviet Union dies at 91

Today world leaders rushed to deliver tributes to Mikhail Gorbachev – who has died aged 91 – describing him as a “towering global leader” and an “example to us all”.

Back home, the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union has left him an unkinder legacy – although Vladimir Putin said he’d had a “huge impact on the course of history.”
