Migrants making treacherous journey to Canary Islands – on small fishing boats

Thousands of people from North and West Africa are travelling to the Canary Islands by sea on small fishing boats.

It’s often a treacherous and deadly crossing.

Many are motivated by the economic hardship brought on by the pandemic.

Almost 20,000 have arrived on the islands this year – a 12-fold increase from 2019.

We have been speaking to some of those who have made it.
