M23 rebel advance through DRC sparks fears of wider war

Rwandan-backed rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo are now advancing through more territory in the east of the country – after they captured the city of Goma, home to around two million people.

M23 fighters are said to be consolidating their hold over Goma – raising fears that other neighbouring countries could be drawn into a wider war.

Dozens of Romanian mercenaries who’d been hired by Congo to strengthen their defences have now fled across the border into Rwanda.
