Team GB break the world record on their way to gold in the men’s track cycling team sprint. Sir Chris Hoy fifth picks up his fifth gold medal.

WORLD RECORD IN TEAM PURSUIT

Team GB’s cycling pursuit team break, comprising Geraint Thomas, Ed Clancy, Steven Burke and Peter Kennaugh, break the world record on their way to the semi-final. The team broke the record witha time of three minutes, 52.499 seconds.

Victoria Pendleton and her teammate are DQ’d for overtaking at the wrong point in the track. A tearful Pendleton conceded the rules had been applied correctly. But Jess Varnish, who will now not compete again in the Olympics, was too upset to speak.

Team GB add to their rowing medals haul with a silver in the men’s lightweight fours competition. Rower Richard Chambers described the race as “brutal”. Gold goes to South Africa, the country’s first in rowing.
