Lebanon in crisis after explosion, as hunt for survivors continues

International Editor

Today was a day of national mourning in Lebanon, but the hunt for survivors of Tuesday’s explosion continues. As do the bitter recriminations.

France’s President Macron jetted in to survey the damage – and in remarkable scenes, he mingled with crowds of angry residents.

He hugged one woman and promised people that he will not let foreign aid go to “corrupt hands”.

But with millions starting to pour into a country beset with corruption and political infighting, is that a promise he can keep?
