At least eight people have been killed after Japan was hit by the strongest typhoon for 25 years, bringing torrential rain and winds gusting over 100 miles an hour.

Typhoon Jebi made landfall earlier today along western areas, as authorities ordered a million people to leave their homes amid fears it could trigger widespread flooding and landslides.
