Italian minister calls for census of Roma communities

A hardline anti-immigration politician has sparked outrage in Italy. The Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has reiterated his call for the country to carry out a census of its Roma population.

The newly appointed minister dismissed accusations of racism – after the plan was compared to laws under Mussolini’s fascist regime. But even his own Five Star movement allies have rejected the idea of a census.
