Inside a Covid hospital ward as lockdown begins

Day one of England’s third lockdown, and with more than a million people infected with coronavirus, the government has warned it is likely to stay like this until March.

Hospitals are under unbearable pressure – wards filling up, crucial operations cancelled, oxygen running low.

Similar lockdowns have been imposed across Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales and this crisis has by no means reached its peak.

We have been given access to one hospital already stretched to breaking point.
