India’s Covid crisis: Untrained relatives of virus victims take on medical roles as Uttar Pradesh struggles

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is coming under more pressure to impose a strict lockdown across the country, as the surge in coronavirus cases shows no signs of coming under control.

Hospitals in major cities like Delhi and Mumbai are at breaking point, but the situation in many remote rural areas is even worse.

Around a quarter of a billion people live in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state. Medical resources are scarce, and as Mandakini Gahlot reports families have resorted to turning living rooms into makeshift clinics to treat sick relatives at home.
