India’s prime minister has extended the country’s lockdown until at least the end of the month to control the spread of the virus.

More than 7,500 cases and 239 deaths have now been confirmed in the country. But extreme restrictions are already causing severe hardship among India’s poorest people. And hard-pressed hospitals are battling the surge in infections – facing shortages of protective equipment and staff.
