‘If you have 15 four or five-year-olds in the class it is impossible to social distance’ – National Education Union’s Mary Bousted

Teachers’ unions today met the government’s scientific advisers to discuss their concerns about plans to reopen schools in England on the 1 June.

Some teachers have said that social distancing will be difficult to implement and questioned whether staff should be given personal protective equipment.

The Education Secretary has said safety is paramount but that getting children back to school is “vital” for their educational development.

Channel 4 News spoke to Mary Bousted, Joint General-Secretary of the National Education Union and Steve Chalke, founder of the Oasis trust, one of the biggest academy chains in England.
