The Conservatives wanted three key victories last night: along with Hartlepool they wanted to keep their mayors in the West Midlands and the Tees Valley.
Ben Houchen came through in droves, winning a landslide 73% of the vote.
The area was promised millions of pounds in Rishi Sunak’s budget – so did voters give Mr Houchen the credit for persuading Westminster to part with the cash?
