Hong Kong pro-democracy candidates win landslide victory in elections

By any measure it was a landslide. Pro-democracy candidates in Hong Kong’s council elections swept to wins in 17 out of 18 districts.

And while the leader of Hong Kong Carrie Lam appeared to strike a note of contrition, saying she would “seriously reflect” on the result, the message from Beijing remained as strident as ever – Hong Kong is part of Chinese territory.

Separately, an international group of investigative journalists has claimed it has documents detailing the systematic abuse and internment of hundreds of thousands of Muslims in camps in the Xinjiang region.
