Hong Kong police fire tear gas at protesters after parliament chamber is stormed

Europe Editor and Presenter

What started last month in Hong Kong as protests against a proposed extradition law has tonight reached a crescendo.

Pro-democracy protesters stormed the legislative council building, railing against fears of mainland interference.

They spent hours spraying graffiti and pulling apart the building before huge numbers of riot police sent them running.

It all came exactly 22 years to the day since Britain handed back sovereignty of the island to China.
