Home Secretary Javid questions Channel migrants’ asylum status

Foreign Affairs Correspondent

People shouldn’t risk their lives to cross the Channel, the Home Secretary Sajid Javid declared today, as he defended the Government’s decision to declare a major incident over the number of migrants trying to reach the UK.

To prove it, he joined a Border Force vessel patrolling the waters, but critics have denounced his claim that those making the risky journey might not be “genuine” asylum seekers, accusing Mr Javid of whipping up anti-refugee sentiment.
