Heathrow third runway approved by cabinet

A third runway for Heathrow has been on and off the government’s to-do list for decades. Today it was back on, after the cabinet approved controversial plans to expand the airport.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling told MPs that the “time for action is now”, with a Commons vote in the next few weeks. Tory MPs have been told they must back the governnment’s proposal, but Theresa May is making an exception for “those with long-standing objections”, and that includes the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.
