End of the World: what really happened behind Wapping walls

When the phone-hacking allegations piled up and eventually took down the News of the World, Hayley Barlow was there to witness it all. Here is her story.

As PR manager at the paper, Hayley Barlow tweeted diary extracts in real time exactly one year after the closure of the News of the World.

Now head of communications at Channel 4 News, she recalls the dramatic events leading up to the last ever edition of the newspaper.

Allegations of phone-hacking in 2011, particularly that the News of the World hacked murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler’s voicemail, closed the paper and kicked off a scandal which led to resignations and arrests at the top of Britain’s media and political elite, a major public inquiry and the attempted reform of the press.
