Grenfell firefighter overcome as he appears at inquiry

The first senior firefighter to arrive at the scene of the Grenfell blaze has insisted that evacuation of the 24-storey building was “impossible”.

Michael Dowden said he initially believed his teams could put out the fire, thinking it was contained on the fourth floor.

At times he struggled to continue giving evidence when shown footage of the fire.
