Grenfell fire reveals housing divide

Economics Correspondent

Ten million people across the UK live in social housing, many of them in tower blocks like Grenfell. What the fire revealed was not just the desperate state of some of that housing stock, but the state of Britain, where the price of private property is soaring, driving inequality between home owners and those who society has simply left behind.

But while those who provide social housing see the need for safety improvements, they fear the money for that could come from already stretched house-building budgets. And that could make the housing shortage worse.
