Government to build residential centres instead of prisons for female inmates

Most women behind bars have committed non-violent offences, and many have experienced abusive relationships or mental health issues. Campaigners have long railed against the “futility” of prison for such women, and today the government said instead of planned new prisons it will now build five residential centres.
