From their back yards to ours – the new exhibition from America’s deep south on show in Margate

He was born one of 27 children in America’s deep south, says he was traded for a bottle of whiskey when he was four, and picked cotton.

Lonnie Holly’s life and work addresses a part of the American civil rights movement in a way that’s very rarely on show,  except in the artist’s own yards.

Now it’s part of a landmark exhibition over here at Margate’s Turner Contemporary.
