French MPs demand answers after government official filmed attacking protesters

French prosecutors are investigating one of President Macron’s leading officials, who attacked May Day protesters in Paris wearing a police helmet.

Alexandre Benella was caught on video dragging a woman down the street, and hitting and stamping on a young man. He was suspended for two weeks following the incident.

But opposition MPs are now demanding to know why – if the government knew at the time – they didn’t take stronger action.
