‘Freetown to Treetown’ – mayor outlines plan to plant a million trees

Thousands of miles across the African continent, in Sierra Leone and its neighbours, the overheating planet and desertification are becoming ever more urgent.

And countries there feel they are paying the price for the emissions pumped out by richer nations.

Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, who’s the mayor of Freetown in Sierra Leone, has been vocal in asking developed economies to step up and help those suffering from the effect of climate change in the global south.

She is here at COP as part of a network of global mayors pushing for urgent climate action.
