Europe’s populist right rallies as Austria’s Vice-Chancellor resigns

Austrian Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache angrily denounced the sting that provoked his resignation as “a targeted political assassination”.

A spontaneous demonstration of several thousand people outside the Chancellor’s office in Vienna demanded fresh elections.

Less spontaneous was the rally in Milan for a gathering of Europe’s populist right, a campaign season finale ahead of next week’s election.

For the nationalist populist movement it’s been a day of lows and highs.
