‘Stronger than yesterday’ – the Ed Miliband playlist

Ed Miliband launches his fight-back with the words “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Sound familiar? Channel 4 News digs out the songs that appear to have inspired the Labour leader.

‘Stronger’

Mr Miliband is recovering from a chaotic weekend of toxic briefings, and a slew of negative headlines generated by disgruntled Labour figures calling for him to stand down. Insisting that his opponents have strengthened his resolve, he borrowed a phrase from the gloomy German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche: “There is a saying which goes: what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

Indeed Ed. Or as Kelly Clarkson put it:

‘Believe’

But what’s driving him? Mr Miliband says mettle and a thick-skin is part of the job. “You need resilience in this job. You need fight. But above all, you need belief in what you’re doing.”

Or as Justin Bieber once said:

‘Everyday people’

The tenor of Ed Miliband’s Labour is to appeal to the squeezed middle – or the families that on regular incomes that are still struggling each month. The rich and the powerful are well catered for under the current coalition, Mr Miliband said. Instead, he promises to “battle for everyday people, and not just the privileged few”.

Like Arrested Development once said…

‘Eyes on the prize’

And what about those trying to destabilise the party? Some figures spoke out over the weekend and nearly brought the party into a leadership crisis, while others insist it is the energy companies, banks and opposition parties sensing Labour in the ascendancy.

Today Mr Miliband said: “Between now and the election, they are going to use every tactic to try to destabilise, distract us and throw us off course. Our task is simple: not to be distracted, but to keep our eyes on the prize of changing this country.”

In the words of pop prince Michael Jackson:
