Dozens of migrant workers among Beirut explosion victims

They were from Syria, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Ethiopia – dozens of those who died in the Beirut explosion were migrant workers, employed at the port or in neighbourhoods nearby.

They were among more than 250,000 foreign labourers in Lebanon, stranded far from home, often in poor housing and struggling to make ends meet.

The impact of the coronavirus crisis and the economic collapse has been compounded by the devastation caused by the blast.
