Diesel and petrol cars to be banned from 2040

Twenty three years from now, new diesel and petrol cars and vans will be banned in the UK. But while the implications of the government’s long term “clean air strategy” are big on ambition, it is, say critics, short on detail. There won’t, for example, be a diesel vehicle scrappage scheme, and local councils won’t be forced to introduce compulsory clean-air charging zones in cities. And then there is the question of significant investment in installing electric vehicle-charging points across the country.
