Covid: UK daily cases reach 50,000 for first time in six months

Covid cases are continuing to surge across the UK, with more than 50,000 new daily cases for the first time in six months.

Latest figures show more than 51,000 people tested positive in the last 24 hours and 49 further deaths have also been announced.

According to the Office for National Statistics, one in 95 people in England are currently infected with Covid.

Rates of the disease are still rising to their highest since the beginning of February.
