Nearly half the population of Australia is back in lockdowns ranging from three days to two weeks as the country tries to stop the Delta variant spreading this winter.

Fewer than 1,000 people have died in Australia since the pandemic began, but the new variant poses a threat because the country’s vaccine rollout has been very slow.
