China and Hong Kong leader condemn ‘violent’ protesters

Europe Editor and Presenter

The Chinese government has strongly condemned pro-democracy protesters who stormed the Hong Kong legislature last night, accusing them of “trampling on the rule of law” after several hundred demonstrators vandalised parts of the building and sprayed slogans inside the chamber.

Hong Kong police fired tear gas overnight to disperse any remaining protesters, while Britain warned China not to use the continuing unrest in Hong Kong as a “pretext for oppression”.
