In Hebrew: Gaza's 'birthplace of saints and death-yard of angels'

We publish in Hebrew Jon Snow’s account of the scene in Gaza’s al-Shifa hospital, where doctors struggle to treat adults and children wounded by Israeli attacks. Read the English version here and the Arabic version here.

Next time don’t use Google translate…
This was translated by academic translator who knows Hebrew, but its unreadable for the fluent Hebrew speakers…

    1. Joe Whyte says:

So wot, I cannot read Hebrew but I fully understand from the pictures what the Israeli terrorists are doing, shame on them.

    Mr Snow,
For I have seen you, interviewing Mark Regev I wish to salute your courage and probity.

There is nothing more respectable that fighting for the truth.

    With my compliment.

Perhaps investigate who is removing your video from Facebook and why? I shared this and so did my husband and quite a number of our friends. Our posts and related comments have been deleted and are no longer visible. Unless it is a glitch it is v worrying.

I have posted Jon Snows blog which still seems to be working. Hopefully for you it’s a blip.

    2. Gracie says:

This has happened to me and my friends too, totally outrageous. Facebook need to be held accountable for doing this, and explain themselves.

  7. Imran Ahmed says:

I applaud and respect Mr Snow (and channel 4)for his courage and conviction. The mudslinging against him has started, It is unfortunate that today we have been reduced to defending him for telling the truth and facts as they are. Israel and it’s supporters need to wake up to hear what he is saying. He has no political agenda, he is not afraid of the mighty and powerful. He is merely saying and showing what’s happening. If that is wrong I am afraid we have very little hope for justice in this world.

    1. A DICKENSON says:

Where do you stand on Hamas atrocities against Israeli towns, eg Sderot, Ashkelon and others, over the past 12 years as Hamas fired thousands of rockets at Israeli civilians?

I am also given to understand – in fact, I have it on good authority – that not all these Gaza scenes are necessarily from Gaza: they were in fact shot in Syria or elsewhere in the Mid-East.

Where do you stand on ISIS, who have murdered thousands in Iraq or the 170,000 Muslims slaughtered in Syria by Muslims? Have you been outraged when Egyptians were murdering each other? And where were the protests over the past 12 years as Hamas fired thousands of rockets at Israeli civilians?

      1. David says:

The terrorist are displace people fighting for any shred of dignity, they would be an army if they had money and support from the west, but they dig holes and throw rock to affirm that they exist and are people. They are completely controlled by another state their movement and supplies are determined by Israel who has dehumanized them to the point where there life is worth 1/20 of the people who hold power over them.

Of course they throw rocks and crappy missile, and even blow them self-up. But the question has to be asked. What do you have to do to someone to make blowing themselves up a better option than going to school? Take from them their freedom, friends, children, parents, land, dignity, and hope would be a start.

      2. Gill says:

David, all those acts you speak of were committed and still are BY Hamas TO the Palestinians. It is the terrorists you refer to who are stealing from their own people, and they are not fighting for a “shred of dignity”. The Hamas charter openly has the destruction of Israel as it’s aim. That’s what they’re fighting for, not dignity or independence or food or water or infrastructure or anything else. They have all of that, it’s just that Hamas is the government of the Gaza Strip, and it is Hamas that is withholding those things from its own people.

      3. David says:

The terrorist are displaced people fighting for any shred of dignity, they would be an army if they had money and support at the same level as there oppressors, but they dig holes and throw rocks to affirm that they exist and are people too. They are completely controlled by another state their movement and supplies are determined by Israel who has dehumanized them to the point where there lives are worth 1/20th of the people who hold power over them.

Of course they throw rocks, ineffective missiles, and even blow them self-up. But the question has to be asked. What do you have to do to someone to make blowing themselves up a better option than going to school? Take from them their freedom, friends, children, parents, land, dignity, and hope would be a start.

Freedom is precious and all of us would do anything for it. Jewish people more than anyone should understand this, and know that overwhelming force will not break a people spirit for self determination

  8. Eamonn Morgan says:

When is this going to stop Britain and the USA have got a lot to answer for how many more children have got to die Israel should be done for war crimes.

  9. Clea Cherrill says:

Nothing justifies the genocidal and racist slaughter of Palestinian women and children in order to steal their land. Israel is wedded to an expansionist political objective and uses social media to legitimize murder. Israel’s fable to justify evil is not worth the toilet paper its written on. Today’s Israelis do NOT descend from Biblical Israel but from a race in the Caucasus called the Khazars.

  10. Gitti Dunham says:

    Mr. Snow,

Channel 4 news so often represents the voice of the weak and the powerless. For this I salute you and you will remain my favourite news channel. I have one question: in connection with the current situation in Gaza, is there some reason why, when interviewing Israeli politicians, your reporters never directly refer to the blockade of Gaza?

  11. Israeli journalist says:

When would you start acting like a journalist and look at the full picture of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict?
When would you show that Hamas is training the very children you’re mourning as Jihadist suicide bombers?
When would you show the thousand of rockets flying into Israel for the past 13 years- since Israel has left Gaza?
When would you show the millions of dollars spent on a terrorist infrastructre built by Hamas instead of investing in the wellfare of its people?
    let’s see you print this….

    1. Joe Whyte says:

Sorry I just cannot accept your argument. Mr Snow, has, for once in a very long time, shown who the real terrorists in Palestine are and they are not Arabs. I am a true believer that given long enough the truth will come out, and guess what, journalists like Mr Snow, have at last reporting the truth. Well done Mr Snow but don’t stop there.

  12. Shmuel says:

Israel has a right and duty, like any other county, to defend its citizens. The fact that these terrorists are firing M75 missiles at 5 million people seems to have escaped you. Israel is fighting the UK’s war against extreme Islamists and is constantly on the front line. The UK’s thanks for this are these biased reports.

Can you re-post your appeal for the 180,000 killed in Syria, 50,000 killed in Afghanistan and the thousands killed in Iraq? or how about all the thousands the UK and US killed in those regions?

Lets call this what it really is – antisemitism.

    1. Imran Ahmed says:

      Antisemitism??
Are you for real? Israel has occupied Palestine for more than a generation. You expand your settlements without any respect for international law. You don’t respect the UN resolutions. Than after all this you kill civilians and children who can’t run anywhere.

If this is defending yourself I am afraid you will have to go back to basics. Get out of the occupied territories. Free the Palestinian people let them have their basic human rights and then tell me about defending yourself. I will support you.

      1. A DICKENSON says:

For your information Palestine, as a nation-state, has no more credibility than the late Enid Blyton’s Toyland. It was only a region, first under the Ottomans, then under the British Mandate.

There is an international law that sanctions Israel: it’s called the San Remo Agreement of 1920 that confirms Israel’s right to that land, the Jewish people’s homeland as promised to them by Our Father God from Genesis Ch 12. As to the so-called ‘Occupied’ Territories: that’s just a legal term – since 1967 Israel has re-claimed what is historically and biblically Judea-Samaria.

      2. Joe Whyte says:

Imran Ahmed, excellent comment which I wholly support.

    2. Kash says:

Israel a country that did not exist before 1946. Israel is built where Palestine is. the People you call Terrorist are defending their homeland from invaders. Killing young Children, Woman is against any human rights. they are trying to exist in their own country.

      1. Gill says:

Kash, at least get your facts straight. Firstly, it’s 1948 not 1946, but thanks for the extra 2 years. Secondly, there has never been a country called Palestine in that part of the world. That’s just a historical fact. One day there probably will be, when Hamas lays down its weapons. Thirdly, the word “Palestinian” was never in use before 1967, so nearly 20 years AFTER Israel was formed. Yasser Arafat started using the word to legitimize his terrorist activities. He needed someone to be fighting on behalf of, so he started referring to “his people” as Palestinians. If we’re going to have a grown-up debate, at least lets argue about the facts, not some made-up version of the truth.

  13. Badry says:

Someone compared Palestinian firing rockets at Israel to “a victim of gang rape scratching the rapists while being raped”.

Stop the rape and rockets stops.

    1. Ashley Dickenson says:

Tell Hamas: what right to they have to fire rockets at a sovereign state prophesied in the Bible and confirmed by history, not least the Balfour Declaration and the subsequent San Remo Agreement.

  14. Etty Isaac says:

    Dear Mr Snow,
I was terribly disappointed with the conclusion to your latest Gaza Strip article.
First of all, you were wrong in your ‘facts’ in which Iron Dome stops ALL rockets. It does not. Second, you forgot to mention that the shrapnel from these stopped rockets still fall down on Israeli civilians (and actually already killed one civilian).
Third, we still have to run for shelter every single time a rocket is being shot. Whether Iron dome succeeds or not doesn’t stop the sirens from sending us to shelters. No school, no sleep, no time to run.

And last but not least, you totally forgot to mention that the IDF will completely stop it’s military attack if HAMAS will stop firing rockets at Israel. Do you not find it an important piece of information? It is in their hands to stop their children from dying, so why do they not stop?

Yes, it is heart breaking the children die. But if it’s our kids or their kids, guess what?

I a expected a much more balanced article for a veteran like yourself rather than an emotionally uncontrolled plea against Israel. Hamas using kids to get world support and you fell straight into their disgusting propaganda.

    With disappointment,
    Etty Isaac

    1. Joe Whyte says:

Dear Kobi, surely do not honestly believe the rubbish you have wrote. Mr Snow gave a very accurate account of what the Israeli terrorists are up to in Gaza. You say Hamas have been building these tunnels for four years or more to kidnap and murder Israelis in September 2014, your media say they have been using the tunnels to fire rockets further into Israel. Why, if what you say is true did they not do it last September as they had the tunnels. If they have been using the tunnels to get into Israel to fire rockets killing and maiming Israeli men woman and children, why has the death toll not been declared as the thousands in Palestine have. I am sure, if you are Jewish you may well not like Mr Snows report because of the factual truth in it but don’t worry I’m sure the BBC will jump to defend the terrorists in Israel.

You say Hamas is not a Democracy, well of course it is not. It is a political group fighting to get out of their concentration camp. By what you say it would infer that Israel IS a democracy, this could explain the Israeli mindset, you see a Democracy is not a person or a political party but rather an accepted set of norms with give the people in that country (citizens) human rights under law I forced by the state to ensure equality for all. In Israel your democracy only extends to the Jewish community, sadly if you are a Palestinian living in Israel then they come under a different set of rules.

You make reference to intending to kidnap Israelis. Kobi the Israeli jails are full of kidnaped Palestinians and is a major part of the problem. You make reference to a report of 160 children being killed under slave labour by Hamas, who wrote this report, America or Israel sadly I cannot find it.

Sorry Kobi, if Israel continue on the path of terrorism then the only thing I can see for them is another 40,000 years in the wilderness. So tread carefully. I have never, until recently been on a march to protest, against any group of people. In the main I have always accepted the Israeli cause, not anymore and this has saw me, in my old age, taking up the banner in support of the Palestinian people against the Israeli aggressor.

  15. Gill says:

Jon Snow, you’re a very experienced and respected journalist. It is therefore doubly disappointing that you and Channel 4 choose to only report one side of the story. Nobody, certainly not Israel, is saying the deaths of any civilians, especially children, is right. And yet, night after night I watch you spew the same one-sided vitriol, almost in tears when you talk about Gaza like you have some sort of connection with the place, but then laying into whoever you do bother to interview on the Israeli side, essentially accusing them of calculated genocide for the 5 minutes of air time you bother to give them.

On your “Children of Gaza” clip, you also blatantly misstate the facts. Yes, Iron Dome intercepts many rockets, but it certainly does not intercept “absolutely everything”. That’s just blatantly incorrect. Why don’t you report on the damage and deaths on the Israeli side? Why didn’t you go to Sderot and interview people whose homes have been destroyed by rockets and whose kids spend their lives now running to a bomb shelter several times a day? I know the Israeli casualties are less in number, but your reportage belittles their deaths and suggests that they mean less than Palestinian deaths. That, Jon, is not only skewed, unethical reporting, it’s also very close to racism and quite frankly it does you a disservice.

I hope you wake up soon and make some effort to report both sides equally. So you can, as you say, “do your part” in trying to resolve this situation.

  16. Page says:

It seems C4 news is one sided. biased and does no service to honest journalism.
Why don’t you ask Hamas the reason they spend aid money to tunnel to Israel, and make weapons of indiscriminate aim rather than spend it on farms and infrastructure. Will C4 news report on the hamas tunnel and rocket program. Will C4 news understand the danger of glorifying terrorism? Israel has no choice but to hammer hams.

    1. Ashley Dickenson says:

Not only this but our taxes are contributing towards the PA’s educational establishments who educate their children to hate Israel.

The Israelis could put Christians to shame when it comes to ‘Loving one’s enemies and turning the other cheek’, as Jesus preached: eg supplying food and electricity to Gaza whenever there’s been a shortage: treating a Hamas official’s wife in an *Israeli* hospital ..

  17. ben p says:

thank goodness for journalists like Snow and the C4 team, god knows the Israeli power bas across the world conrtols so many

    1. Ashley Dickenson says:

Really Ben P? I’ll bet Hamas doesn’t allow a free critical press – unlike Israel. And I speak as a Christian who supports Israel and who is opposed to persecution of Christians in both Gaza and in the PA.

  18. Kobi says:

I think there should be peace between Israel and the Palestinian state.
I think Gaza should be free – FREE FROM HAMAS.
Hamas spent over 3 years digging terror tunnels that lead directly to Israeli towns and villages. These tunnels were built with one purpose only: To murder and kidnap Israeli citizens on Jewish New Year Eve in September 2014. They were built by Hamas with concrete and electricity provided by Israel, while the rest of the city suffers power shortages and desperately needs concrete.
Hamas purposely hid bombs, weapons and missile launchers in schools, kindergartens and (Israeli-built) hospitals. It’s hard to grasp – but these people, Hamas, consciously decided to turn these areas into battlegrounds by launching their assaults from there. PURPOSELY. Why? Because of the impact of the upcoming civilians casualties on the world media and public opinion. Not only that, but reports say over 160 CHILDREN and teenagers died from FORCED CHILD LABOR and work-accidents during the digging of said tunnels.
THEY LITERALLY SACRIFICE PALESTINIAN CHILDREN IN ORDER TO GET PUBLIC ATTENTION.
Any country that has missiles and rockets shot at it will and should react to these launches by firing at the launch source. These launch sources are INTENTIONALLY populated, sometimes people are FORCEFULLY PREVENTED from leaving. Better a chance to survive an attack than a certain death at gun point. Moreover, 20 Palestinians protesting Hamas’s involvement in the war were PUBLICLY EXECUTED for voicing their opinion.
HAMAS ISN’T A DEMOCRACY. It’s a fundamental tyranny with absolutely no regards to its citizens’ well-being.
    .
I hear a lot of voices concerned about this “religious” war. THIS WAR ISN’T FOUNDED ON RELIGION. I refuse to acknowledge the recognition of Hamas as a religious organization. There is no moral, ethical or theological justification for their actions. They DO NOT represent Islam; they are a shame and a travesty to true followers of the Islamic faith.
Hamas’ leadership thrives on nothing but hate and money. They rob their population of a decent living (in 2013 Gaza’s per capita GDP was approx. $1,000, while in the West Bank, who cooperates with Israel – over $2,500), control every penny going in and out of Gaza, while stacking BILLIONS of international support money in personal, hidden bank accounts and personal investments around the globe. The Palestinian people will never enjoy the money.
    .
Do you begin to understand what Israel is dealing with? The combination of no regard to human lives, the fundamental belief that all infidels deserve death, the ruthless oppression of basic human rights, human freedom and any kind of opposition, the violent nature and constant provocation of Israel and the constant refusal by Hamas to lay down their arms and talk – supported by Iran, Syria and Qatar but shunned even by their fellow Arab nations Saudi Arabia and Egypt – All of these are the true causes, the true perpetrators of the continuous human rights crisis in Gaza.
By turning a blind eye to Hamas, and reflexively pointing the finger at Israel, you are reassuring the success of its despicable, inhumane strategy and in fact contributing to the continued suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza.
    .
I am an Israeli Left-Wing supporter.
I WISH FOR PEACE MORE THAN ANYTHING. I would give my right arm and left eye for a real peace treaty. I HONESTLY WILL. I wish for the bloodshed to stop. I HONESTLY DO.
But I will not stand aside as my country is bombed, day by day and year by year. I will not go as lamb to slaughter as terror plots are being devised against the citizens of my country, while tunnels with an obvious goal are being dug underneath my citizens’ houses and schools.
We will not go as lambs to slaughter just to satisfy your ill-informed, distorted views on whoever is responsible to the continuation of this horrendous conflict.
    .
If you’ve read so far, I thank you. I also encourage you to read some more. Seek out information about Hamas, the enemy of both Israel and the people of Gaza. Critically examine who deserves your loud concerns, and supporting which side might actually lead to an end to this conflict.
May we all know better times soon, Salam Aleykum, Peace.

    Kobi, Tel-Aviv.

  19. David says:

Americans in Iraq fought door to door in densely populated areas to avoid this. How can Israel be given a pass to bomb such populated areas indiscriminately? In a way it dishonours our US solders who lost there life’s doing the right thing under international law. America needs to support the UN in stopping this now and stop voting no to anything that might criticise or condemn these uncivilised actions.

What can we do to stop this?

    1. Gill says:

      David,

What you’re saying is simply not true.

Firstly, portraying American soldiers (in any conflict, not just Iraq) as angels who carefully avoided killing local civilians is what dishonours their memory. They gave their lives for a cause they believed in and in accordance with their government’s policies and their loss is tragic, but they are not without their faults and abuses.

Secondly, whilst American soldiers may well have taken a house-to-house approach some of the time, we all saw the images of flattened parts of Baghdad, Falluja, and a whole bunch of other places in Iraq which American planes and artillery caused. “Shock and Awe” is an American phrase.

Thirdly, do some research and compare the “densely populated” areas of Iraq you refer to and see how they compare with Gaza.

Fourthly, what is uncivilized is the actions of Hamas in stealing from their own people, then sending those people out to be killed in order to squeeze more sympathy and money from the global community, of which they then steal more, repeating this ridiculous cycle.

  20. Lara Monteiro says:

It’s great that now we get to see what has been otherwise kept from our sight, thank you for that.

However I am not amused unlike others who get a thrill with sensionalism which I suppose pay your salaries.

I am left incredibly frustrated because alone I have no power over any of this and my will to stop it overwhelms me.

What I really want to know is : what can and what will you do with all this media power??? And how can o contribute.

You are right together something can be done but how is that going to happen how can we unite?

    Thank you

  21. Naheed kabil says:

The myth of Israel’s right to Palestine as well as their illegal and brutal U.S. supported Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza has finally been exposed and shattered by a Zionist Generals’ son, Miko Peled ~ who reveals in his book that Israel’s rabid Zionists are very similar to America’s rabid neo-conservatives and that the only hope for the region depends on a bottom up American public outcry for human rights and democracy to replace the current Israel Garrison state of subjugation and apartheid:

  22. Upoma says:

When people need to justify themselves for standing up for innocent children, humanity is dead. When people suddenly find they can justify killing innocent children, humanity is dead. I came here to say thank you Jon Snow.

  23. Steve Saragossi says:

I would like Mr Snow, if he has the guts and the integrity he so wants us to believe he has, to answer the points in this open letter. Personally, I think he was just auditioning for a plum job at Al Jazeera. I reckon this post will be deleted because it hits right at the heart of the decline of open, honest, impartial investigative journalism, which Snow appears to be spearheading.

    https://apragmaticzionist.wordpress.com/2014/08/01/jon-snow-jacccuse/

    1. Gill says:

Steve Saragossi, I applaud you on a well-drafted and, more importantly, TRUTHFUL account of what has been going on in Israel and Gaza. Jon Snow and the majority of the British media is eating up the propaganda fed to them by Hamas without bothering to stop and think or consider both sides, and it is astounding that apparently First World journalists are controlled in this way by lies propagated by Third World terrorists.

      1. Lara Monteiro says:

More than 300 children dead = FACT!!!
Propaganda or not, let’s stop this nonsense instead of justifying the death of children!!!! We should at least concentrate in moving the children to safety out of Gaza!!!!
Sorry bits my humble but honest opinion

  24. Justice says:

Thank you Jon for telling the shameful truth.
