Did Cameron face strong opposition from Tory backbenchers?

Former Tory MP Paul Goodman has done the maths ( you can see it here) and David Cameron was opposed by more than half of his backbenchers in the vote on the 1922 Committee.

As Paul Goodman says, you can’t rule out that some ministers may have voted against the leader (I was in the corridor watching the dynamics between opponents and whips and I am pretty sure some did).

You also have to acknowledge that this was a secret ballot and the opportunities to rebel in secret are pretty limited. Interesting nonetheless.

On a different note, I just bumped into the new Scottish Secretary Danny Alexander, and this dynamic, energetic and hugely ambitious man, who has been central to the coalition negotiations and the entire Nick Clegg leadership, could be rounding off this fortnight with a second child any minute now.
